The list of countries that make it all work is smaller than you think. In The End of the World is Just the Beginning, author and geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan maps out the next world: a world where countries or regions will have no choice but to make their own goods, grow their own food, secure their own energy, fight their own battles, and do it all with populations that are both shrinking and aging. Billions of people have been fed and educated as the American-led trade system spread across the globe.Īll of this was artificial. American security policy forced warring nations to lay down their arms. Complex, innovative industries were created to satisfy American consumers. Globe-spanning supply chains are only possible with the protection of the U.S. Navy. The American dollar underpins internationalized energy and financial markets. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it.Īmerica made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going. 2019 was the last great year for the world economy.įor generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper.

"Grog Wars, Dos" is a Finalist for the Chanticleer's International Book Awards, Dante Rosetti Award for YA (November 2018) I stir a few psychic abilities into my storytelling, to offer book lovers unique adventures in award-winning historical fiction. I am the daughter of a history teacher and granddaughter to an Irish yarn-spinner. When Perseus finds her chained to a rock, he frees her, kills her fiancé, and rapes her. Meanwhile, beautiful Andromeda offers herself up as a sacrifice to appease the gods after a jilted suitor’s father blames her for a crop-destroying storm. Medusa, a thoughtful leader of a community of women who have fled male violence, saves Perseus from a snake bite, but rejects his marriage offer, spurring Perseus to kill her instead. She washes ashore in Seriphos and spends the next 18 years telling her son, Perseus, that he’s the son of Zeus (in fact, his father was a baker who broke into Akrisios’s palace where Danae was cloistered). Danae is banished from Argos by her father, King Akrisios, after she becomes pregnant, thanks to a prophecy that a grandson would cause Akrisios’s death. Heywood ( Daughters of Sparta) adds to the wave of feminist retellings of the classics with a vivid if unbalanced account of the Perseus myth. When they dance, they are more than the pieces of their lives-they are whole. They help the characters express complicated feelings while they work through the demons in their lives. From New York Times bestselling author Sharon Draper, this is a riveting exploration of power: how. Dance and music swirl throughout the novel as colorful decorations. So in Panic, I used Peter Pan as the backdrop as students in a dance academy prepare for a performance of it. New tights, a slice of pizza, and they’ll be off. Look at any missing teen website and you'll see the faces of young people who are yearning to be found.Īnd although most of us think of Peter Pan as a delightful children's tale, it is really a harsh story of someone who sneaks into a bedroom at night and steals three children! It's an abduction worthy of an Amber Alert. Teen abductions in this country often are not reported because it is assumed that the teen simply ran away. It was six months before they were able to escape their captor. They got into his car voluntarily, thinking probably of being proud of making a sound, adult career decision. Several years ago I read an article about two girls, ages 14 and 15, who were abducted from a mall by a man who promised them jobs in the modeling profession. Apparently Burke also had trouble finding a publisher for his first book but his agent kept shopping it around and Burke was very thankful for his persistence. But that's what James Lee Burke, another of my favourite writers, says in the foreword to this book. It's hard to believe that Michael Connelly had a number of rejections before this book got published. I’ve never been to LA, but I could picture it and its people perfectly thanks to Connelly’s descriptions and dialogue. So, pretty good on all fronts. It gave you the sense that the setting was genuine. It’s a gradual and interesting decline to a conclusion that promises the possibility for good future sequels.I didn’t find anything especially fresh and new in Connelly’s voice or POV, although I thought his dialogue was excellent. It doesn’t just drop off and end suddenly. The book has a tense climax and really good falling action. I can’t point out a single thing wrong with the plot of this book - it’s tight. There’s plenty of action mixed in with important character development scenes and world-building. I think the beginning was a little slow, but I can overlook that given the quality of the book as a whole.Obviously, Connelly has been hugely successful with Harry Bosch (see: the number of books in the series), and I can understand why. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. I learned that I want the people I deal with to say what they really believe and to listen to what others say in reply, in order to find out what is true. Cartoon from XKCD by Randall Munroe Ray’s quote: 1 This post is about someone complaining against his peers, those he sees as competition or those who may be in his way. Backstabbing (the subject of this article) and whistle-blowing are two completely different things. Please note that this article is not about ethical whistleblowers, people who have no choice but to complain secretly about someone in a position of great power and formal authority above them engaged in wrongdoing. This article starts with Randall’s cartoon, Ray’s and my quotes on the subject and then discusses the causes of and solutions for this problem. On the matter of bad behavior of complaining against others behind their backs, Ray Dalio, Randall Munroe and I share the same viewpoint. I am honestly humbled to have been able to read this one, as its such a unique story and I can’t wait to see where this author takes the world that she has been creating from Killian’s book. There will always be one book that is missing something or is lackluster, but that definitely isn’t the case with this one at all. I have never seen such solid writing from an author or in a series, its so rare. The author has really come into her prime of writing with this series. What is so unique about this series is that each book is just as good as the next one and every single installment is so well balanced. I have to say after reading it, its highly warranted as this book is a even match for all of the others. This is also a book that has been making the rounds among every facet of the community and it has been so fun to see all the excitement for this book that readers are experiencing. This is a book that has been building throughout the series, as our hero, “Spider” has been in the series leading up to this one and so it was such fun to finally get his book to be written.
